My Essay Idea

I will write in my essay about generation gaps in Japan. I am interested how Japanese people of all ages should coexist regardless of generation gaps.

I think this issue is important because Japan has some problems about generations. Now, in Japan, nuclear family is becoming popular. As a result, young Japanese have fewer opportunities to touch cultures in senior generations. Thus, I think generation gap became wider. In addition, Japan is becoming super-aging society more and more and some people of advanced age are isolated. Thus, cultures in other generation (for example, traditional culture for me) are important to coexist, understanding superiors.

There are some reasons I am interested in this topic. First, from summer reading, I learned about conflicts between generations and difficulties to understand different values between generations. Second, when I read Japanese Nonverbal Communication written by McDaniel in RCA class, I thought some characteristics of Japanese culture in the text is changing. From this, I think it is difficult to define Japanese culture itself regardless of its difference between generations. Third, in my actual life, I sometimes feel the difference of values and attitudes from my parents and grandparents. From these reasons, I want to think about the system of generation gaps.

I have questions about this issue.
1 What is Japanese culture? Is it possible to define it regardless of uncountable difference
   between generations, areas, etc.?
2 What are the different characteristics of Japanese culture between generations?
3 What are specific examples of difficulties because of generation gaps?
4 Do generation gaps have some good points?
5 How Japanese can coexist, recovering difference between generations?

I found the folloing sources regading the issue.
1 Bridging the generation gap; MOBILE BROADBAND, The Age (Melbourne, Australia),
   BRAD HOWARTH, 2007
2 Bridges spanning the generation gap, The Nikkei Weekly (Japan), 2007
3 Why we hate the brats of Generation Y, The Daily Telegraph (Australia), SARAH WILSON,
   2008
4 SEEING THE WORLD THROUGH THE EYES OF A GRANDCHILD, St. Petersburg Times

  1. How about dealing with the issue of stress (and sometimes violence) in the cases of children taking care of elderly parents?

That needs a lot of solutions for communication and systems to relieve stress.

    Good luck with the research!
